Principal designer for Shawna Starkman Design Group ( SSDG ) , Shawna Starkman loves the unexpected. The spaces she creates are known for being beautiful, luxurious, modern, and tranquil, but there is almost always an unexpected twist in her design. Like the dresser lacquered in automotive paint, or the gold-leafed Japanese staircase to a child’s loft, or the hand blown chandeliers from Brooklyn artisans. She knows all of the places to shop to get you wonderful things for your home – she just doesn’t think shopping has to be the only option. Creating something that is made for your home can sometimes be more fitting.
Ms. Starkman began her career in New York as a set designer for commercials and music videos. Throughout her fifteen years in the industry she worked with a diverse group of clients including Max Factor, L’Oreal and Mastercard, as well as musicians Lenny Kravitz, Sean Combs, David Bowie and Jennifer Lopez. Collaborating with the artists and directors, she created innovative visuals from unexpected sources and materials and continues to do so today.
Helping her clients find their way through the sometimes overwhelming world of interior design is her passion. She believes everyone has a unique style, and if you express that style authentically, your life improves – sometimes dramatically.
In addition to studying Interior Design at FIT in New York City, Ms. Starkman has studied theater, dance, and film both in the United States and Canada.
Ms. Starkman has extensive experience designing and executing major residential renovations as well as commercial projects. She is committed to creating earth-friendly, non-toxic, sustainable environments whenever humanly possible.
